Mountain summer in Obertauern
Surrounded by lush green mountain meadows, the village of Obertauern lies at 1,740 m above sea level. In the middle of a vast alpine pasture area, which is surrounded by peaks over 2,000 meters high. Crystal clear mountain lakes lie nestled like precious stones in this vast
Basin.
Just as the downhill slopes surround the village in winter, a network of hiking trails lies around Obertauern in summer. The network of hiking trails connects mountain peaks and refreshment stops for a summery Tauern Round.
Savvy mountain bikers may be familiar with the “Stoneman” Challenge. The “Stoneman-Taurista”, i.e. the Austrian variant, leads via Obertauern. A fixed route with 123 km and over 4,000 meters of altitude must be mastered in one, 2 or 3 days. Read more at www.stoneman-taurista.com

Hiking around Obertauern, where you can still experience the mountains in peace.
Worthwhile destinations such as the Südwienerhütte, the Twengeralm, the Tauernkaralm, the Dikt’n Alm or the Oberhütte invite you to linger. The Hochalm can be reached comfortably with the Grünwaldkopfbahn, which is in operation from the beginning of July to the beginning of September.
Half-day hikes:
Gamsspitzel, Wildsee, Herbertspitze, Gamsleiten, Twengeralm lake, Plattenkarspitze or over the Grünwaldkopf to the Hochalm and on to the Dikt’nalm.
Day hikes:
Südwienerhütte via the upper Hirschwandsteig, Glöcknerin, Tauernkaralm, Oberhütte and Oberhüttensee, Twenger Almsee and Grupitscheck, Steirischer Kalkspitz, Lungauer Kalkspitz, Ignatz Mattis Hütte.

Halfway from Untertauern to Obertauen lies the Gnadenalm. A beautiful, relatively flat alpine pasture area invites you here to linger and enjoy a leisurely hike.
The “Alles Alm” adventure trail is nestled in this lovely landscape. “Alles Alm” provides insights into the probably hard, but also happy life of people from long ago and from today’s point of view. At eight entertaining themed stations, visitors learn true events, curiosities and interesting facts about life on the mountain pasture, about nature and the numerous animals. The starting point and terminus is the observation tower with the giant slide at the big pine tree, from where visitors can slide into the fun. “Alles Alm” an entertaining hiking experience with fun play stations, unusual rest stops and a fun puzzle game for the whole family.
Stopover
Whether you are mountain biking the “Stonaman-Taurista” Challenge, or with the family on the way to the sea: The Hotel Kärntnerland is ideal for a stopover.
By the way, the route via Obertauern to Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, etc. is one of the few ways to cross the main ridge of the Alps without paying additional tolls. In addition, you avoid the almost pre-programmed traffic jam on the A10 at the bottleneck Tauern Tunnel/Katschberg Tunnel.

Summer retreat
This slightly “gray” term for a vacation in the mountains, describes in one word, what many long for today in the hot summer months: While in some areas sweltering heat buries any sense of well-being, even the nights are unbearably hot and the desire to sleep through the night again is a long way off, that’s exactly what you’ll find in Obertauen:
Pleasant temperatures in the mid 20° range during the day, making outdoor exercise a pleasure. At night it cools down a bit, so sleeping with the window open becomes a pleasure.
And by the way: Have you ever walked barefoot in the morning dew through a lush green alpine meadow? An indescribably refreshing feeling, the energy of which can be felt throughout the day.
Motorcycle vacation
Obertauern is an ideal starting point for day tours. The region offers unimagined opportunities for touring on winding mountain roads with little traffic. The tour area extends from the Salzkammergut in the north to the border triangle (A – I – SLO) in the south, from the Grossglockner in the west to the RedBull Ring in the east.
